KATHERINE BORKOWSKI-BYRNE

I believe painting is its own language that speaks to the eyes as music speaks to the ears.  My paintings are like symphonies with thundering areas and peaceful passages.  Each of my abstract paintings express an original visual score that one’s eyes can follow and find something new and visually delightful –and still surprising after many views.

I have always considered drawing and painting as my first language.  It is a nonverbal language that has a wide-range of expression using lines, space, colors, and forms. With heavily-laden paint brushes and other techniques,  I explore the depths of intuitive mark making.

It was after standing before the work of the foremost painter of the New York School of the 1950's, Willem de Kooning, when I understood how powerful painting can be, and immediately, I found my life’s passion in painting.  I continue to find inspiration in the larger world of improvisation and the groundbreaking work of abstract expressionism with the concept of “being in the moment” during the act of painting.

Though born and raised in New Jersey, I didn’t begin using oil paint until I found myself as a newly-married young woman, living in Nova Scotia, and studying with a man who was a graduate  of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.  I decided Boston was the place for me to continue my studies as an artist, and I received my B.F.A. from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in 1986.   While there, I was honored to receive an award by one of the most famous living artists,  Frank Stella, serving as the judge for a competition for independent student work.

My influences also include the work by painters as various as Chaim Soutine, Joan Mitchell, Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky.  I also welcome inspiration from various outside sources like clouds, ocean waves and reflections; however, once I am painting I let go of any beginning ideas and allow the painting to take on its own direction. It is the “not knowing” that makes each piece an adventure.

I enjoy using experimental techniques, including painting with socks, sticks and long-haired brushes attached to a mop handle.  I often put the painting on the floor and use my whole body to dance around the canvas using various tools and often just my fingers to blend the paint on the canvas.

I have continued to become a prolific artist with work in private and public collections, having received awards and reviews.  I am now an associate member of the Fountain Street Gallery in Boston; and, I enjoy working in two studios: one near Boston and one in North Adams, Massachusetts.
