"Poom Baba" is an oil painting on paper made while thinking of the joy and wonder of young children. It is a colorful painting with hot pinks, reds, blues, greens and purples on a misty background of mostly blues. It is filled with energetic brush strokes and explosive experimental mark making.
"Poom Baba" is an oil painting on paper made while thinking of the joy and wonder of young children. "Poom Baba" was inspired and titled by the name of a song my son noticed my then five-year old grandson singing as he was speeding along on his scooter through the streets of Montreal. It became his own leitmotif. My musical son decided to record the song, with the help of the Garage Band app. He describes the piece as follows: "It centers on the repetition of a catchy lyrical hook with a strong syncopated rhythmic drive."
Recently, when looking up images of my work online, my painting "Poom Baba" appeared on Pinterest. it was hanging in a bedroom, and the headline of the article under the image read: "These clients are introducing art to their children early...."
I love how this brought the story full circle: a song written by a small child and reinterpreted in a grandmother's painting found its way to hang on the bedroom wall of another small child, whose parents chose it as a way to introduce them to art.
You can listen to "Poom Baba" under the name Matias Jackson as it is now available on Spotify, YouTube, and iTunes, as performed by the young composer and singer.
